A. F. Moritz, Canadian poet, former poet laureate of Toronto, he has published 22 books of poems that have received international and national honours such as the Guggenheim Fellowship, the Award in Literature of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Griffin Poetry Prize. His most recent book, Great Silent Ballad, received the prestigious Al and Eurithe Purdy Poetry Prize, and his new book, The Wren, will appear in spring 2026 from House of Anansi Press, Toronto.

Mr. Moritz, as the keynote speaker, shared his observations of both the older and younger generations of Chinese living in downtown Toronto, highlighting their differences in style, perspective, and cultural influence. He then read his poems, reflecting on cherished memories of nature from his childhood in a small American town, the idle life of a laid-back man, and the collective longing for harmony with nature. He also spoke about his visits to Chongqing and Shanghai, sharing the cultural differences he encountered and how these journeys—and the experience of translation—have deepened mutual understanding and promoted cross-cultural growth and exchange. He thanked Anna Yin for translating his poems and invited her to read the Chinese versions for him. Anna added that she first met Mr. Moritz at a translation conference at the University of Toronto in 2012, where one of the poems—also the fourth one shared at this event—was translated into Chinese in two very different ways, which deeply inspired her. Later, she began translating Mr. Moritz’s work herself and discovered many shared cultural experiences embedded in his writing. These resonances inspired her to write several response poems, one of which—Some Trees Come to Me—she will present shortly.

Anna Yin was Mississauga’s Inaugural Poet Laureate (2015-2017) and has authored seven poetry collections and four books of translations. Her poems/translations won awards and appeared at ARC Poetry, New York Times, Queen’s Quarterly, China Daily, CBC Radio etc. She read poetry and teaches Poetry Alive in China, Canada and the U.S.

Anna Yin presented two videos and a live performance to demonstrate how her cultural background and Western influences have shaped her as a poet. In the video My Accent, she shares a personal journey from self-doubt to self-acceptance. The poem was selected for Canada’s National Poetry Month and included in the Ontario teacher resource bank. Her video Some Trees Come to Me features lyrics inspired by her new book Breaking into Blossom and Al Moritz’s The Great Silent Bell. Anna also collaborated with guitarist Mark Harry to set her poem A Chinese Nightingale to music. These works are part of her recent project Peace and Harmony Through Poetry and Music, which received a microgrant from the Mississauga Arts Council. Like today’s event, the project aims to bridge cultural differences and artistic visions, fostering peace and harmony within the community.
古土，青海乐都人，出身汉藏结合家庭。母语为藏语。后上大学 中文系，创办《星光》诗刊，在八十年代北京高校有一定影响。 毕业后一直从事新闻出版工作，曾为为新华社主任记者，多次获 新闻奖，较有名的有关于可可西里藏羚羊保护的系列稿件，在全 国有较大反响。诗作曾在中、加、美获奖。现居加拿大多伦多， 主持以“独立之精神，自由之思想”为宗旨的加拿大湖畔书院。
Gu Tu is a poet and journalist from Qinghai, China, born into a Han-Tibetan family. A native Tibetan speaker, he later studied Chinese literature and founded Starlight, a poetry journal influential in 1980s Beijing. He worked for Xinhua News Agency and received national awards for his journalism, including a series on Tibetan antelope conservation. His poetry has won prizes in China, Canada, and the U.S. He now lives in Toronto, where he leads Lakeside Academy, promoting independent spirit and free thought.

Gutu, as the keynote speaker, delivered a talk titled “Images and Sounds: A Comparative and Reflective Exploration of Chinese and Western Poetry.” He began by discussing the structural differences between Chinese and English languages, then delved into the aesthetic features of classical Chinese poetry and the challenges of translation, drawing comparisons with the development of Western Imagist poetry. He also touched on Buddhist cultural influences and his own poetic practice, examining how images and sounds shape poetic expression across cultures. Using specific examples, Gutu illustrated how different translations of classical poems evoke distinct sensory experiences, and he also shared some of his own poetry written in Tibetan. Due to the large number of participants and presentations, he was unable to share more of his insights within the limited time.
多位诗人也参与了本次活动，朗读自己的作品并展开深入交流。英文诗人Allan Briesmaster、Bunny Iskov、Diana Manole、Patrick Connors、Paul Edward Costa 和 Renée M. Sgroi，与中文诗人姜尼、湖边、秋叶、飞鸿、彧蛇、青城子等，围绕诗歌创作与文化交流，分享了富有见地的思考。

Several other poets also contributed to the event by sharing their work and engaging in meaningful dialogue. English-language poets Allan Briesmaster, Bunny Iskov, Diana Manole, Patrick Connors, Paul Edward Costa, and Renée M. Sgroi, together with Chinese-language poets Jiang Ni, Hubian, Qiuye, Feihong, Yushe, and Qingchenzi, offered thoughtful reflections on poetry, creativity, and cultural exchange.
The event also featured vibrant performances by musicians, educators, singers, filmmakers, and photographers, who enriched the program through music, recitation, and visual storytelling. With the passion and artistry of all involved, the symposium concluded on an uplifting and memorable note.
